Nothing here changes the band’s playbook.

Future Past is largely uptempo and full of swaying beats that highlight Rhodes’ foundations as well as his ornamentals. You may be thinking, “Big deal, anyone can throw a kitchen sink against the wall and call it an album.” That’s true, but Future Past remains a consistently tuneful album despite having so many hands on deck.īassist John Taylor says that the lyrical content focuses on “emotional crises, or long-term intimacy issues, let’s call them.” And while Covid-19 certainly exacerbated any “intimacy issues” we may have been facing, Duran Duran used the time to calibrate a highly vibrant vehicle for Le Bon’s lyrics. Tove Lo, Ivorian Doll and Japanese band Chai contribute vocals, the in-demand session musician Mike Garson adds some piano and Blur guitarist Graham Coxon co-authored half the album. All You Need Is Now and Paper Gods kept the glam quotient high while the band did their best (and mostly succeeded) at not sounding like forgotten artifacts from the ‘80s. And since reuniting the original lineup for 2004’s Astronaut, Simon Le Bon and Nick Rhodes have been especially preoccupied with making the music sound as big and flashy as they could.

Being pioneers of the new romantic movement, these guys didn’t traffic in subtlety that much. Future Past features at least three different producers and five guest musicians.

Hence, they are making the most out of every bar of music. Duran Duran’s output has slowed to a trickle lately, giving us only four albums over the past 14 years.
